Mission, goals and objectives of the “Discourses of Ethics” academic periodical

The academic periodical “Discourses of Ethics” is a peer-reviewed academic quarterly journal dedicated to the urgent issues in the theory and history of ethics, as well as contemporary issues in applied ethics.

The mission of the journal is to provide the discourse platform for both the professional ethical community (including scholars, university educators, and students) and the broader audience engaged actively in the study of ethics and the actualization of moral norms and values. We aim to reintegrate specialists in the field of ethics and to ensure availability of knowledge and high educational standards for students in humanities.

The goal of the journal is to encourage active debate on history of ethical knowledge and on trends within ethical disciplines, public morality, the relationship between ethics and law, issues of values, and the prospects for the development of ethical and humanitarian fields in both contemporary Russian and international contexts.

The journal adheres to the principles of open access to the results of scholar research.

The objectives of the journal correspond to the following thematic sections:

  • Studies of history of ethical doctrines and moral concepts within ancient civilizations, the medieval period, modern era, and contemporary society.
  • Analysis (and critique) of classical ethical theories.
  • Introduction of new ethical concepts and authors working in the field of ethics and morality to a broader readership. The international character of the journal helps the scholars from different countries to familiarize themselves with the discourses of each other.
  • Publication of recent and most relevant results of research in the fields of ethics and moral philosophy.
  • Formulation of the most influential trends in the development of ethical thought at present, presentation of prospects for establishing interdisciplinary connections between ethics and science, as well as facilitation of communication within the academia and representatives of other professional fields.

Options for manuscripts: original scholar paper, discussion of a scholar paper (also as an invitation to discussion), scholar essay, review and short message about scholar events and new literature, translation of text with a foreword and comments by translators.

The journal welcomes submissions of texts representing diverse outlooks on researched topic provided that the texts are original, novel, independent, and critical in nature, well-argued and ethical.

Editorial decisions in journal is not affected by any origins of the manuscript, including the race, nationality, sex, gender, age, ethnicity, citizenship, social status, sexual orientation, religion or political beliefs of the authors.

The staff of the periodical scientific publication “Discourses of Ethics” direct all their efforts to the continuous improvement of the journal in accordance with the principles and values stated above.

Compliance Policy

In their work, all the members of the Editorial Board are guided by the current legislation of the Russian Federation, in particular Law of the Russian Federation No. 2124-1 of December 27, 1991, on Mass Media, with all amendments and additions to it that have entered into force, as well as section VII: ‘The right to products of intellectual activity and means of individualization’ of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, with all amendments and additions to it that have entered into force.

We also adhere to the internationally accepted standards for the work of editors and authors of scientific publications, as developed by European Association of Science Editors (EASE). and Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

In accordance with the Federal law Nº436-FZ ‘On Protecting Children from Information Harmful to their Health and Development’ of December 29, 2010, there is no age restriction to access the materials published in the journal (18+).

Authors retain the copyright of their works published in «Discourses of Ethics».

«Discourses of Ethics» reserves the right to share information about the publication of an author's work, which may include extracts from the abstract (if available).

The periodical scientific journal «Discourses of Ethics» is a non-commercial project.

The journal does not include commercial advertising materials.

No fee is charged to authors for publication, reviewing, or editorial processing of the submitted manuscripts.

Authors of the manuscripts published in «Discourses of Ethics» do not receive any financial compensation for their contributions.

The procedure of reviewing.

Review of all manuscripts submitted for publication is carried out in accordance with the procedure established and approved by the Editorial Board.

All manuscripts submitted for publication are registered by the Editorial Board, with the date of their receipt recorded.

Submitted materials are reviewed within 2 months from the date of receipt. Authors will be notified about the acceptance of their manuscripts and the status of the review process.

In cases the submitted manuscripts do not comply with the formal requirements (relevance of the manuscript to the topics of the journal and following the requirements of text formatting, references, and bibliography), the Editorial Board reserves the right to reject the text without initiating the review process. Authors may be invited to revise their submission to meet the aforementioned requirements. The periodical scientific edition «Discourses of Ethics» does not offer expedited publication. The process of reviewing is obligatory for all manuscripts submitted.

If the author detects errors and/or inaccuracies after the review process have been started, the author should immediately notify the Editorial Board of the journal about them.

Each manuscript proposed for publication goes through a double-blind peer review process. The personal data of the reviewers and the authors shall be withheld.

Independent review by the author is not allowed.

Reviewing of manuscripts is conducted on a voluntary and unpaid basis.

The reviewers are appointed by the Editorial Council. The reviewers involved are the experts in the corresponding fields, who have published works in the given area of research over the past five years. Reviewers may be members of the International Editorial Board and Editorial Council, as well as employees of Saint Petersburg State University, provided there is no conflict of interest.

All manuscripts submitted for publication by the members of the Editorial Board are subject to the same review process as those submitted by any other authors.

The Reviewers should notify the Editorial Council about any possible conflicts of interest.

All Reviewers should adhere to the principles of Publication Ethics of the scientific periodical «Discourses of Ethics». The Reviewers have the right to decline the review within one week from the day they received the materials, and notify the Editorial Council of the journal about this.

The review process includes a plagiarism check, with the results and method of the check clearly documented. Reviewers are also asked to pay close attention to any omissions of references to previously published statements, conclusions, or arguments, including those by the author of the submitted text.

The review takes into account the current state of philosophical research and the diversity of perspectives existing within the scope of inquiry of the submitted text.

Reviewers are required to provide an objective and well-argued assessment of the manuscript submitted for publication. Reviewers should follow main criteria listed below:

— Relevance, novelty, and scientific, as well as practical, significance of the submitted text.

— The author's accounting of existing literature, published data, and current studies in the corresponding area of research.

— Clarity and logical coherence, consistency of argumentation, and completeness of conclusions.

— Accuracy and reliability of the data, citations, and research results presented in the text.

— Adherence to the style of scientific writing, correct use of terminology, clarity of illustrations and other supporting materials, accuracy of references and bibliography.

After a comprehensive review of the submitted manuscript the Reviewer may recommend:

— That the Editorial Council accepts the manuscript for publication;

— That the Editorial Council accepts the manuscript for publication on the condition that the author revises the article in accordance with the Reviewer's recommendations;

— That the Editorial Council refuses publication.

After considering the reviewer reports, the Editorial Council decides whether the manuscript is accepted for publication.

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, a letter is sent to the author, with the recommendations for revising the article (if necessary), approximate publication dates, and the intended issue data.

If one or both Reviewers recommend revising the manuscript, the author is sent the excerpts of the anonymized reviews that include comments and suggestions addressing specific concerns with the proposal to take them into account.

If both Reviewers recommend rejecting the manuscript, the author is sent the excerpts of their anonymized reviews that include a list of reasons for rejection.

In case where there is no consensus among the reviewers (including when one of them requests changes to the manuscript), the final decision authority belongs to the Editorial Council.

By decision of the Editor-in-Chief, repeated and additional reviewing may be carried out by the same or other reviewers, including in the case of the author resubmitting the manuscript after it has been revised and/or corrected.

The submitted manuscript may only be modified once.

A rejected manuscript may not be resubmitted for a reconsideration.

If there is a difference of opinions among the members of the Editorial Council regarding the publication of a manuscript, the final decision authority belongs to the Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

The Editorial Board does not provide services for text revision, compilation, and/or revision of the bibliography.

Any corrections of the text accepted for publication will be agreed upon with the author.

Manuscripts accepted for publication are openly accessible.

Reviews are stored for 5 years. Upon request to the Editor-in-Chief, they are provided to representatives of the state authorities of the Russian Federation in accordance with current legislation.

The Russian Scientific Citation Index system (based on the website “Scientific Electronic Library eLIBRARY.RU”) serves as the external electronic backup resource including the accessible journal content.
